Amla is commonly called as Indian Gooseberry. It is a deciduous plant which has its fruit with high medicinal value. Scientific name of this is Phyllanthus Emblica. Amla is India's own product and is a major constituent of the celebrated Ayurvedic preparations, Chyavanaprash and Triphala. Originally thought to be a rich source of vitamin C, the active principles of Amla have been shown to be low molecular weight hydrolyzable tannins containing a molecular fragment similar to ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
